Non-members and guests are welcome (there is a small charge).

Most other meetings/events (e.g. seminar) incur a charge to cover costs.

Members are eligible for a discount at other meetings.

Thurs 19 February 2026  HOGG Online: The Miners’ Stratigraphy and the 18th century roots of stratigraphic geology,   with Dr. Ru Smith.

 

Wed 18 March 2026 (13.00-14.00 GMT) HOGG Online: Andrija Mohorovičić: Croatian seismologist and the Crust–Mantle boundary discovery, with Dr John Milsom.

 

Thurs 23 April 2026 (13.00-14.00 GMT) HOGG Online: The real Glacier Controversy: the history of attempts to explain how glaciers flow, with Professor Brian Whalley.

 

Wed 20 May 2026 HOGG Online: Andrew Crombie Ramsay and his Geological Lectures to Working Men: no compromise, with Anne Barrett.

 

Mon 29 June – Sat 4 July 2026. HOGG Field Meeting: Auvergne, France. Volcanoes of central France: evidence of early ideas about igneous activity, erosion and theories of the Earth.  Leaders: Professors David Pyle (University of Oxford) & Ben van Wyk de Vries (Université Clermont Auvergne). Thurs 20 August 2026.  HOGG Wikipedia Workshop.

 

Mon 20 – Wed 23 September 2026 (days/dates tbc) HOGG Field Meeting: Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland. Tercentenary of James Hutton Field meeting: Journey to the South Alpine parts of Scotland in the year 1786: locations in search of proofs for ‘Theory of the Earth’. Leader: Duncan Hawley.

 

Wed 18 November 2026 (tbc) HOGG AGM  and online talk to mark the Tercentenary of James Hutton’s birth ‘The French foundations of Hutton‘s ‘Theory of the Earth‘, with Gregory Todd.
